Today me,Carl and Shara went for a run. Shara,as always, for the first 5 km was sitting in her jogging stroller . When it was time to do some exercises in the outside gym-Shara usually runs around and watches us do some crunches and sit-ups. It was a very nice run despite quite creepy/cloudy weather.
Suddenly,i see two people coming. At first i thought it was a granny coming with his grandchild. But it was an older man coming with his son, a guy in his 30-s with dwarfism.
I don´t know about you,but i´m not used to seeing "little people" that often. Neither is Shara. I was extremely ashamed when Shara, that was playing a few minutes before, suddenly stopped playing and started staring at the guy. And pointing finger. I´m not really sure whether Shara thought it was a fellow-kid . I can also say, that even though i really tried not to seem weird, treat him/or look at him as if he was different , i could feel how uncomfortable the "little guy" felt by being there, standing just a couple metres away from a child that was almost as tall as he was. And here is the thing i thought then: this is not his problem that was my problem. That is my problem that in my head i thought this person is different and that many people think they are less humans then we are. God(if you believe in God) or some higher power created us different. Some of us are white, black or yellow, some are tall, short, fat or skinny. That is why we are humans: we have to use our mind and accept our differencies. "Little people" as they themselves prefer to be called instead of "dwarf"(in swedish "kortvuxna människor" och inte "dvärg")
are considered handicapped people.
Achondroplasia is a bone-growth disorder responsible for 70% of dwarfism cases.
Growth hormone deficiency (GHD) is a medical condition in which the body produces insufficient growth hormone. Children with this disorder may grow slowly and puberty may be delayed by several years or indefinitely. Growth hormone deficiency has no single definite cause. It can be caused by mutations of specific genes, damage to the pituitary gland, Turner's syndrome, poor nutrition or even stress (leading to psychogenic dwarfism).
Yes, they are little people. But personally, i think calling them handicapped is too much. There was certainly some hormonal mistake that led the baby´s development stop and a person stays a "little person" forever. But that doesn´t mean this person can´t move, can´t think, can´t work out, can´t work, study, date, travel or eat. In some cases, little people people are way better and more productive then some of the normal-height people.
God bless every person on this planet. We all are born to this world to make a difference and tell the world about who we are and what we like. I really hope every person finds a love and compassion in their life. Cause, at the end of the day, whatever is our job, career, social status, sex, looks, how many mistakes we did in our life or amount of hair we have on our heads-we all melt down if he get to hear these simple but said from the heart words: " You mean a lot to me".
